Building Services 2

Building Services 2 is taught by Dr. Kam Kenn Jhun. In this module, i was able to study and understand the services provided in most buildings, namely mechanical air conditioned systems, fire protection system, electrical supplies and vertical transportations. A vast knowledge on coordinating and installing of these services are essentials on to becoming a quality surveyor. It is very important that an individual familiarize themselves with the available existing services used in buildings all across the globe. Regarding the assignment of this subject, we were asked to form a group of 7 people whereby a documented report had to be prepared along with slides for presentation purposes. Each group had to undergo a study on any existing building in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor area and look through its services properties. Our group of 7 consisting of Kelly, Jake, JC, Rachel, Aiman, Goh and I chose Tesco Extra in Mutiara Damansara as our case study building. My group and I carpooled and went for a trip to Tesco Extra to further witness the the services provided in and around the hypermart building.

Learning Outcome:

Throughout this module, I have further advance my problem solving skills and this subject teaches me how to think outside the box in terms of finding a creative and innovative way in solving problems. I am able to learn more independently each week with the help of the tutorial questions provided by Dr Kam. The exercises are very helpful and relevant in terms of gaining the knowledge of services to buildings. On the other hand, I was able to appreciate more on the importance of teamwork and communication among group members. Discussions and arguments among the group has helped me develop more understanding to towards the importance of teamwork. Ideas and opinions can be shared between one another which helps in solving critical problems through different perspectives of each individual.

Management Science

This subject is taught by Mdm Tay Shir Men. The module has given us the understanding on concepts, theories and principles to management and various organizational characteristics. The classes and lectures being conducted by Mdm Tay also gives us an idea on how to become and efficient and effective individual. For the group assignment, we were assigned to form a team of 4 people to write a report on how to start up a construction company with one million in capital. The report is conclusive of the short, medium and long term goals of the company as well as its vision and mission. Organizational charts to indicate the job scope of each position must also be stated in the report. As for the second part of the assignment, the company has to assign 3 project managers for further development. In consequence, we are acquired to suggest two activities to test the credibility of the potential candidates as to whether they are suited to the requirements. Part 3 of the company's report would be on how they are going to utilize information technology and information management skills which would subsequently create competitive advantages.


Learning Outcome:

This module has help enhanced the understanding of the different types of management tools in not only the construction industry but also applies to most organization. The classes, notes and lectures has helped me develop new decision making strategies and understand more motivational concepts. Throughout the subject, I have studied and understand more on the procedures for strategy formulation and decision making. It also helps me realize the importance of an establish and quality management skills to an organization.

Sustainable Housing Development

This elective module is taught by Mdm Mariatul Liza. The syllabus for the subject require students to study and understand the importance of sustainability to developments in our country. In this module, we were assigned with two assignments. The first assignment given is a report on selected topics regarding housing developments.We were given a list of topics to choose whereby i selected awareness on the implementation of sustainable housing development in Malaysia. The second assignment required our class to form a group of four and select a lot in Setia Alam as a proposed site for development. We had to plan and create and ideal housing development theoretically and elaborate on its provided facilities. Predicted target buyers are also one of the factors being considered in this assignment.

Learning Outcome:

This module have taught me to understand the importance of sustainability to project developments in our country. Housing developments nowadays has to be sustainable not only for the community, but also to our environment. It was also worth mentioned that our class had a very innovative and productive visit to Setia Alam to find locations to start a housing development.  Sustainable development is a development that meets the need of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own demands.

Measurement 3

This subject is a 4 credit hour module conducted by Mr. Soon Lam Tatt. This subject takes 14 weeks to cover up all of its topics. In this subject, our class was able to understand and study on the measurement of doors, windows, roof trusses, roof finishes, roof drainage, structural steelworks and metal works. We are also able to obtain the principles of specification of writing, form of specification writing and their uses for the various trades. In the matter of projects, we were assigned to form a team to work on a group assignment, whereby a study on the doors and windows of a building were required. Our group consisted of six people namely, James, Parham, Hakim, Kelly, Bryan and I. In this project we have chosen James's apartment as the subject of our assignment because his apartment consisted of six different doors and windows. We were required to do taking offs and to prepare bills of quantities for the doors and windows available in James's unit. In addition, we also need to prepare a report and record the site measurement and dimensions. Based on the site measurement and dimensions, It has help me to understand and practice more on the preparation of measurement and bills of quantities.

Learning Outcome:

Within the completion of this subject, I was able to understand more on the items to be considered when measuring doors, windows, roof structure, roof finishes, roof drainage, structural steel works and metal works. I am also more aware of the difference in writing up the descriptions in accordance to the design of the items being taken off. This is really beneficial for me as it would help me ever so dearly in terms of stepping out of my study life, entering the construction industry in the near future.

Construction Technology 2

This subject is a 4 credit hour module whereby the lectures are provided by Mr. Chiew Seng Khoon. It is one of the more important subjects that we must encounter and understand thoroughly as it helps us gain more knowledge on the technology used in the construction industry. The lectures by Mr. Chiew are pretty innovative and interesting as we are advised to share our thoughts and views on the existing technology. We practice more on sketching to identify the different elements in buildings and Mr. Chiew also provided us with plenty of real life situation videos in describing a number of technology used in construction. This helps give us a better understanding in translating notes into real life experiences. This module has enable our development in the knowledge of the fundamentals of design and technology. Such knowledge will enable students to appreciate the decision made on design, functional element, selection and the rational economic use of resources. This subject also explains the fundamentals of piled foundations, excavations, formwork, scaffolding, shoring and underpinning, partition and suspended ceilings, portal frames, precast concrete and steel roof trusses. There are two assignments assigned to us which one of them is an individual assignment. We were assigned to sketch different parts of buildings which includes the foundations and also different compartments of building parts. The other assignment was a group assignment whereby we had to provide a video regarding any part of a construction process. My group and I chose suspended ceiling as our topic. As a team, our aim was to provide an understandable video so that the video could be used as reference to other people as well as upcoming students for this module.

Learning Outcome:

This module has help me in learning how to assimilate the theories of construction processes with real life practice. I have learned on how to utilize information effectively in doing my assignments. I also gain more knowledge on the complete construction procedures of various types of buildings with suitable materials and design concepts throughout the whole lectures and examinations. I'd also like to add that the videos that Mr.Chiew has provided for us during lectures, has help us in analyzing the construction nature more thoroughly an effectively.
